Fireside Chat: How Can We Bridge the Data Divide? Overcoming Interoperability Challenges for Effective Data Integration
In 2024, the Canadian public sector faces a pivotal question: How can we bridge the data divide? The key challenge is interoperability - how do different data systems and technologies across government departments integrate seamlessly? This isn't just a tech issue; it's about creating a unified data language. Why is this crucial? Because effective data sharing is vital for informed decisions and better public services. As we navigate these challenges, we must ask: Are we ready to forge a path toward a data-integrated future in Canada's public sector?

Presentation: The AI Mandate: Transformative AND Responsible for Our Citizens
Mike Potter - Chief Technology Officer - QLIK
- The citizens we serve are experiencing the transformative effects of Generative AI. Government data leaders are also excited about the use of it within their respective agencies, but many are facing a similar challenge: the insights are only as good as the data that AI models reason over. Without a solid data foundation, governments will struggle to realize the full operational value of Generative AI and will face increased risks of inaccuracies, inefficiencies, biases, and security vulnerabilities. This session will provide an overview of how government data leaders can ensure their agency’s data is ready for Generative AI to help power decision-making and enhance citizen services.

Presentation: Enabling Data-Driven Diplomacy: Data Science at Global Affairs Canada
Jordan Hovdebo - Deputy Director, Data Science - GLOBAL AFFAIRS CANADA
Global Affairs Canada defines, shapes and advances Canada’s interests and values in a complex global environment. The increasing fluidity with which we can access data presents a significant opportunity to improve the way we do so. However, the sheer volume of information available can be overwhelming, making it difficult to extract and structure the relevant information to make it actionable. In this presentation we will discuss the evolution of data science at Global Affairs Canada. In particular, through concrete examples we will demonstrate how data science, and especially generative artificial intelligence, is being used to help the department more efficiently derive insights from its data and how we will scale these technologies for a global organization. -
